Japan wax

CAS
8001-39-6

Description

Japan wax (CAS 8001-39-6), also known as haze wax, is a vegetable tallow derived from the berries of Rhus succedanea trees native to East Asia. Unlike most plant waxes, it contains a high proportion of triglycerides rather than wax esters.

This unique composition gives it a tallow-like consistency that formulators select specifically for its softening and binding behavior across multiple industrial sectors. In personal care, it functions as a consistency agent and emollient structurant.

It is frequently used in lipsticks, balms, and solid creams, where its relatively high melting point helps stabilize formulations. Coatings and polish manufacturers incorporate it to control rheology and improve slip.

The material is also used to adjust surface hardness in floor waxes, shoe polishes, and furniture finishes. The leather and textile industries use it as a softener and lubricant during finishing processes.

This application imparts pliability without compromising surface integrity. Adhesive and sealant formulators add it as a plasticizer to modify tack and flexibility in hot-melt and solvent-based systems.

Japan wax is supplied as pale yellow to greenish solid blocks, slabs, or flakes. It is available in cosmetic-grade and technical-grade specifications, with cosmetic-grade material meeting purity requirements.

These specifications are relevant to personal care applications. Typical commercial lots are characterized by acid value, saponification value, and melting point to confirm batch consistency for industrial use.
