Description

Abietic acid glycerol ester (CAS 8050-30-4), commercially known as glycerol ester of rosin or ester gum, is produced by reacting rosin-derived resin acids with glycerol to form a hard, pale resin.

It functions as a tackifier, emulsifier, and rheology modifier across adhesive, coating, and food-grade applications. In pressure-sensitive adhesives and hot-melt formulations, it improves tack and peel strength.

This versatile resin enhances performance without compromising open time. Ink manufacturers use it as a binder resin in offset and flexographic printing inks, where it controls viscosity and promotes pigment dispersion.

In beverage production, food-grade ester gum is approved for use as a weighting agent in citrus-flavored emulsions. This application keeps flavor oils stably dispersed in aqueous drink bases for long-term stability.

Coating formulators incorporate it into alkyd and lacquer systems to adjust film hardness and improve adhesion to difficult substrates. It is supplied as pale yellow to amber solid flakes, pastilles, or lumps.

Food-grade material is produced to FCC specifications and is the standard requirement for beverage and flavor emulsion applications. Technical grades are available for adhesive, ink, and industrial coating use.

These technical grades are suitable where color and purity tolerances are broader. The material remains a critical component for achieving specific rheological properties in high-performance chemical formulations.
