Rosin
Description
Rosin (CAS 8050-09-7), also known as gum rosin or yellow resin, is a natural resin derived from pine trees and refined for industrial use. Disproportionated rosin is a chemically modified form processed for enhanced stability and specific performance requirements.
Across manufacturing industries, it functions primarily as a tackifier, binder, and plasticizer in a broad range of formulations. In printing inks, rosin-based resins improve pigment dispersion and adhesion to substrates, directly influencing print quality.
These resins also impact drying performance in high-speed printing environments. Rubber compounders use it as a plasticizer and processing aid to improve tack and workability in tire and rubber goods production.
In paper sizing, rosin is applied with alum to control ink absorption and surface strength in packaging and printing grades. This process ensures that the paper maintains structural integrity when exposed to various liquid inks.
Textile and leather processors use it in finishing formulations where controlled adhesion and film-forming properties are required. Rosin is supplied as pale-to-amber solid lumps, flakes, or powder depending on grade and processing method.
Standard commercial grades are classified by color using the USDA/WW grading scale, ranging from water-white (WW) to darker grades for less demanding applications. This classification helps manufacturers select the right material for their needs.
Disproportionated rosin is available as a separate processed grade for applications requiring improved oxidative stability. This ensures long-term performance in sensitive chemical environments and specialized industrial manufacturing processes.
