Resorcinol
Description
Resorcinol (CAS 108-46-3), also known as Resorzin, is a dihydric phenol used across rubber, pharmaceutical, and personal care industries as a bonding agent and chemical intermediate. Its reactivity with resins and proteins makes it a reliable functional input across structurally diverse manufacturing processes. In rubber and tire manufacturing, it is a core component of latex systems.
These systems bond textile cords and fabrics to rubber compounds to improve structural integrity in tires and conveyor belts. Pharmaceutical formulators use it as an active ingredient in topical preparations. It targets acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and keratotic skin conditions, where it acts as a keratolytic agent. In hair color formulations, it functions as a coupling component that develops color when combined.
It also serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of UV absorbers, flame retardants, and specialty resins used in coatings and adhesives. The material is supplied as white to off-white crystalline flakes. Standard commercial grades include technical and pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP and BP specifications. Bulk supply is available in fiber drums or bags for industrial use.
Pharmaceutical-grade material typically requires tighter purity and packaging controls. This ensures the product meets the rigorous safety standards required for medical and personal care applications.
