Azelaic acid
Description
Azelaic acid (CAS 123-99-9) is a saturated dicarboxylic acid used as a functional building block and active ingredient across cosmetic, polymer, and industrial lubricant applications.
It is commercially recognized under the pharmaceutical trade names Skinoren and Skinorem, particularly in dermatological product sourcing contexts for various global markets.
In personal care and pharmaceutical formulations, this acid is the active ingredient in topical products targeting acne and hyperpigmentation, where it functions as a pH-regulating and antimicrobial agent.
Polymer manufacturers use it as a monomer to produce polyamides and polyesters with improved flexibility and low-temperature performance, particularly in specialty coatings and adhesives.
In lubricant formulations, azelaic acid esters produced through esterification with branched alcohols serve as synthetic base fluids and plasticizers suited to high-performance and low-temperature applications.
It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor and dispersant additive in metalworking fluids. The material is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules for easy handling and processing.
Standard commercial grades include technical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical grades, with the latter meeting USP and Ph. Eur. specifications for high-purity manufacturing requirements.
Purity levels of 98–99%+ are typical for high-specification applications, while technical-grade material is available for polymer and lubricant end uses across the chemical industry.
