Sodium polyacrylate
Description
Sodium polyacrylate (CAS 9003-04-7), also known as PAAS or Waterlock, is a synthetic anionic polymer used across industrial and consumer markets for its ability to absorb, retain, and control water in formulations and processes.
It functions as a superabsorbent, thickener, dispersant, and scale inhibitor depending on molecular weight and application context. In water treatment, low-molecular-weight grades act as scale inhibitors and dispersants.
These grades are used in cooling water systems, preventing mineral deposits in pipelines and heat exchangers. Personal care formulators use it to build viscosity and improve texture in lotions, creams, and hair styling products.
It allows for thickening without relying on surfactant-based agents. Agriculture applications include soil conditioning and slow-release carrier matrices, where its water retention capacity reduces irrigation frequency in arid growing conditions.
In pulp and paper manufacturing, it functions as a retention aid and pitch control agent. This improves fiber yield and reduces deposits on process equipment during the manufacturing cycle.
Sodium polyacrylate is supplied as a white powder, granules, or aqueous solution, with concentration and molecular weight varying significantly by grade. Technical-grade material covers the majority of industrial water treatment.
Cosmetic-grade product meets purity standards required for personal care formulations. Molecular weight ranges from low (a few thousand Daltons) to ultra-high (several million Daltons) for various uses.
Buyers should specify the target range when sourcing this material. The versatility of the polymer makes it a staple in modern chemical manufacturing and specialized industrial processing.
