Polyacrylamide
Description
Polyacrylamide (CAS 9003-05-8), commonly abbreviated as PAM, is a high-molecular-weight synthetic polymer used primarily as a flocculant and rheology modifier across industrial processes.
It functions by aggregating suspended solids, colloids, and fine particles into settleable masses, enabling efficient separation in liquid-solid systems. In municipal and industrial water treatment, PAM accelerates sedimentation.
This process improves the dewatering of sludge, reducing processing time and disposal costs. Mining operations rely on it to clarify process water and recover fine mineral particles from tailings ponds.
In agriculture, it is applied to irrigation channels and soil surfaces to reduce erosion and improve water infiltration. Paper and textile manufacturers use PAM as a retention aid and viscosity modifier.
These applications help to improve fiber distribution and process consistency. Polyacrylamide is supplied as dry powder, granules, and aqueous solution, with molecular weight and ionic charge varying by application.
The ionic charge can be anionic, cationic, or nonionic depending on the specific industrial need. Food-contact and potable water grades are available with residual acrylamide monomer content controlled to regulatory thresholds.
Technical grades are standard for industrial water treatment and mining, while agricultural grades are formulated to specific charge density and dissolution profiles to ensure optimal performance in the field.
