Zirconium silicate
Description
Zirconium silicate (CAS 10101-52-7), also sold under the trade name Ultrox, is a naturally occurring mineral processed into fine powder for industrial use. It functions primarily as an opacifier, surface modifier, and refractory filler across ceramics, coatings, and specialty formulations.
Procurement teams source it for its thermal stability and opacity contribution in demanding manufacturing environments. In ceramic glazes and tile manufacturing, it delivers whiteness and opacity without compromising firing performance at high temperatures.
Coatings and enamel formulators incorporate it to improve surface hardness and chemical resistance in industrial and architectural finishes. Personal care manufacturers use milled grades as a mild abrasive and opacifying agent in toothpaste and cosmetic formulations.
In plastics and elastomers, it acts as a functional filler that contributes flame retardancy and dimensional stability to finished components. Zirconium silicate is supplied as a fine white powder, with particle size distribution being the primary specification variable.
Micronized grades are standard for cosmetic and coating applications. Technical and ceramic grades are distinguished by zirconia content, typically expressed as ZrO₂ percentage, and by D50 particle size.
Supply is available in bulk bags and smaller packaged quantities to suit both large-scale ceramic producers and specialty formulators. This material remains a critical component for achieving high-performance finishes in the global chemical and materials market.
