Zirconium tetrachloride
Description
Zirconium tetrachloride (CAS 10026-11-6), also referred to as ZrCl4 or zirconium chloride, is an inorganic salt used as a catalyst and chemical intermediate across metallurgical and electronic manufacturing processes.
It serves as a primary precursor for producing high-purity zirconium compounds and advanced zirconium-based materials. In catalyst manufacturing, it is a key starting material for Ziegler-Natta systems.
These systems are used in polyolefin production, where it initiates controlled polymerization of ethylene and propylene. Electronics manufacturers rely on it as a precursor for zirconium oxide thin films.
These films are deposited via CVD and ALD processes in semiconductor fabrication. In the metals industry, it functions as an intermediate in the production of zirconium metal and zirconium sponge.
This occurs through reduction processes. Specialty chemical producers also use it to synthesize organozirconium compounds and coordination complexes for research and various industrial applications.
The product is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder or granular solid. It is available in technical and high-purity grades, with purity levels typically ranging from 98% to 99.9%+.
These high-purity options are ideal for semiconductor and catalyst applications. Packaging options generally include sealed, moisture-resistant containers due to its reactivity with atmospheric humidity.
