Description

Stannic chloride (CAS 7646-78-8), also known as tin tetrachloride or SnCl4, is an inorganic tin compound supplied primarily as a fuming liquid or in hydrated form. It functions as a Lewis acid catalyst and tin source across chemical synthesis and polymer production.

In plastics and polymer manufacturing, it acts as a catalyst and stabilizer precursor in the production of PVC and other tin-stabilized formulations. This helps control degradation during processing and ensures the durability of the final material.

Pharmaceutical synthesis relies on it as a Lewis acid catalyst for Friedel-Crafts reactions and other electrophilic processes. Controlled reactivity is critical to yield and purity in these complex chemical transformations.

It is also used in the production of indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings and conductive thin films. In these applications, it serves as a tin precursor deposited onto glass or plastic substrates for electronics.

In specialty chemical manufacturing, it functions as an intermediate for producing organotin compounds. These compounds are frequently used as biocides and stabilizers in various industrial formulations and coatings.

Stannic chloride is available as an anhydrous liquid and as the pentahydrate solid, with the hydrated form preferred where moisture sensitivity is less critical. Standard supply grades include technical and reagent-grade specifications.

Bulk quantities are typically packaged in drums or IBCs to ensure safe transport and storage. Smaller quantities are also available for specialized laboratory and pharmaceutical applications requiring precise measurements.
