Ammonium bromide
Description
Ammonium bromide (CAS 12124-97-9), also known by its historical pharmaceutical name Nervine, is an inorganic bromide salt used across pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics, and polymer processing. It functions primarily as a flame retardant additive and pH buffering agent in industrial formulations. In electronics manufacturing, it acts as a flux activator in soldering processes.
The compound contributes to controlled etching in printed circuit board production. Polymer and plastics compounders incorporate it as a halogen-based flame retardant for industrial use. Its bromine content supports char formation and combustion suppression in finished materials. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a buffering and pH-regulating agent in formulation chemistry.
This is particularly useful where controlled ionic environments are required during synthesis or processing. It also appears in photographic chemical systems and specialty chemical synthesis. Ammonium bromide is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules. Standard commercial grades include technical grade for industrial applications and USP/BP grades for pharmaceutical use.
Purity levels for pharmaceutical-grade material typically meet ≥99% specifications. Technical grades are also available for flame retardant and electronics applications requiring high consistency.
