Calcium silicate
Description
Calcium silicate (CAS 1344-95-2), also designated E552 in food and pharmaceutical applications, is an inorganic mineral compound used primarily as an anticaking agent, flow aid, and functional filler across multiple industries.
Its ability to absorb moisture and oils without losing free-flowing properties makes it a preferred additive in both food processing and industrial manufacturing. In food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, it prevents caking in powdered products.
This ensures consistent dosing and packaging performance in items such as table salt, spice blends, and tablet formulations. Rubber and plastics processors use it as a reinforcing filler and processing aid for better results.
These applications improve dimensional stability and surface finish in molded components. In building and construction, it serves as a core material in fire-resistant boards, insulation panels, and ceiling tiles where thermal performance is required.
Structural integrity is a key benefit in these construction materials. Paper manufacturers incorporate it as a functional filler to improve opacity, printability, and sheet formation in various specialty paper grades.
Calcium silicate is available as a fine white powder in varying bulk densities to suit different processing and handling requirements. Supply grades include food-grade, USP, and Ph.Eur. for pharmaceutical use.
Technical grade options are also available for industrial applications. Specifications differ by surface area, oil absorption capacity, and moisture content depending on the intended end use and specific manufacturing needs.
