Description

Tribehenin (CAS 18641-57-1), also known as Glyceryl Tribehenate and commercially as Compritol 888, is a glycerol triester of behenic acid used across pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic manufacturing. It functions primarily as a lipid-based excipient and structuring agent, controlling texture, release behavior, and consistency in solid and semi-solid formulations for various industrial applications.

In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, it acts as a hydrophobic matrix former for extended-release solid dosage forms, slowing active ingredient dissolution without requiring polymer coatings. Cosmetic formulators use it to build structure in stick products, such as lipsticks, deodorant bars, and solid balms, where it controls hardness and modifies the waxy feel on application.

In food-grade applications, it functions as a fat replacer and bloom inhibitor in confectionery coatings and chocolate-based products, improving shelf stability and overall product quality. It also serves as a lubricant and binder in direct compression tableting, reducing die friction and improving tablet integrity during the high-speed manufacturing process.
