Trihydroxystearin
Description
Trihydroxystearin (CAS 139-44-6), also known as Glyceryl tri(12-hydroxystearate), is a fully esterified glycerol derivative of 12-hydroxystearic acid. It is used as a rheology modifier, emulsifier, and lubricant across multiple industrial sectors.
Commercially available under the trade name CUTINA BW, it functions primarily as a structuring and thickening agent in both oil-based and wax-based systems. This versatile chemical provides essential body and texture to various formulations.
In personal care and cosmetics, it provides body and texture to lipsticks, balms, and anhydrous creams without contributing greasiness. It is highly valued for its ability to stabilize formulations while maintaining a smooth application feel.
Industrial lubricant formulators use it as a gelling agent in grease systems, where it builds a stable thixotropic network. This network effectively holds base oils under mechanical stress, ensuring long-term performance and stability.
In coatings and adhesives, it controls flow and sag resistance in high-viscosity formulations applied to vertical surfaces. This prevents dripping and ensures an even application of the product during the manufacturing or construction process.
Food-grade versions are used as a release agent and emulsifier in confectionery and bakery applications. These specialized grades ensure that food products maintain their shape and release easily from molds or processing equipment.
Trihydroxystearin is supplied as a white to off-white waxy solid, typically in flake or pastille form suited for melt-and-mix processing. Standard grades include food-grade and cosmetic-grade specifications for diverse industrial needs.
Food-grade material conforms to FCC requirements, ensuring safety for consumption. Technical-grade material is available for industrial lubricant and coatings applications where food compliance is not required.
