Glyceryl behenate
Description
Glyceryl behenate (CAS 77538-19-3), also sold under the trade name Compritol 888 ATO, is a mono-, di-, and triglyceride ester of behenic acid used as a lipid-based excipient.
It serves as a functional emulsifier across pharmaceutical, food, and personal care manufacturing. Its high melting point makes it a preferred choice for solid-form processing and controlled-release matrix systems.
In pharmaceutical tablet and capsule manufacturing, it functions as a sustained-release matrix former and lubricant. This enables precise drug release profiles in various solid dosage forms.
Hot-melt extrusion and direct compression processes both rely on it to improve flow and reduce tablet sticking. This is achieved without compromising the dissolution properties of the final product.
In cosmetic formulations, it thickens and stabilizes emulsions in creams, lipsticks, and stick-format products. It is ideal where a waxy, structured texture is required for the application.
Food applications include fat-based coatings and confectionery fillings. In these uses, it modifies crystallization behavior and improves the overall shelf stability of the food products.
The material is supplied as a white to off-white waxy powder or flakes. Pharmaceutical-grade material is available to specifications aligned with Ph.Eur. and NF monographs.
Compritol 888 ATO remains the most recognized commercial grade for these industries. Food-grade supply is also available for all applicable end-use categories and manufacturing needs.
