Trimyristin
Description
Trimyristin (CAS 555-45-3) is a naturally occurring triglyceride derived primarily from nutmeg kernel fat, where it constitutes the dominant lipid fraction. In industry, it functions as a structuring agent, carrier lipid, and emollient base.
This versatile compound is utilized across cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food manufacturing applications. In pharmaceutical solid dosage development, it is used as a lipid matrix former in sustained-release suppositories.
The material is essential for lipid-based drug delivery systems, where its defined melting behavior supports controlled API release. Cosmetic formulators incorporate it as an occlusive emollient and texturizer in stick formats.
It is frequently found in body butters and skin conditioning bases to improve texture. In food manufacturing, it serves as a cocoa butter analog and structuring fat in confectionery coatings where precise melting is required.
The product is also used as a carrier matrix in lipid nanoparticle systems for encapsulation. This applies to active ingredients in both nutraceutical and topical formulations requiring high stability and bioavailability.
Trimyristin is supplied as a white to off-white powder or flakes at room temperature. It is available in pharmaceutical-grade and cosmetic-grade specifications to meet various industrial requirements.
High-purity research grades are also offered for formulation development. Material sourced from natural nutmeg fat is standard, with synthetic or semi-synthetic grades available for applications requiring tighter purity control.
