Butyloctyl salicylate
Description
Butyloctyl salicylate (CAS 190085-41-7), sold commercially as Hallbrite BHB, is a branched-chain ester used in personal care and cosmetic formulations. It functions as a UV-absorbing emollient and solubilizer.
This ingredient helps formulators dissolve and stabilize other sunscreen actives while contributing skin-feel properties. In sunscreen and SPF formulations, it solubilizes oil-soluble UV filters such as avobenzone and octinoxate.
By improving their photostability and enabling higher active loadings, it enhances product performance. Color cosmetics manufacturers use it as a carrier and spreading agent in foundations, lip products, and pressed powders.
Its low viscosity aids pigment dispersion across various cosmetic applications. It also appears in skincare emulsions such as serums, moisturizers, and after-sun products where it replaces heavier esters.
This substitution helps achieve a lighter, non-greasy skin feel without compromising emulsion stability. The product is supplied as a clear, low-viscosity liquid suitable for direct incorporation into oil phases.
It is available in cosmetic-grade specification, the standard for personal care and OTC topical applications. Bulk supply is typical in drums and intermediate bulk containers for industrial use.
Sample quantities are available for formulation development and testing purposes. This versatile ester remains a staple for manufacturers seeking to optimize the texture and efficacy of sun care products.
