Description

Homosalate (CAS 118-56-9), also known as homomenthyl salicylate or HMS, is an organic UV filter used in sunscreen and sun care formulations. It absorbs UVB radiation in the 295–315 nm range, protecting both the skin and the stability of other active ingredients in a formula. HMS is a primary UVB-filtering agent in leave-on sun care products including sunscreen lotions, sprays, and daily moisturizers with SPF. Formulators use it as a solvent co-ingredient to dissolve other solid UV filters such as avobenzone.

This improves overall formula clarity and homogeneity across various applications. In color cosmetics and lip products with SPF claims, it contributes UV protection without adding opacity or texture to the final product. Pharmaceutical topical preparations requiring photostability also incorporate homosalate to prevent UV-induced degradation of light-sensitive actives. This ensures the efficacy of the medicinal components remains intact during exposure.

Homosalate is supplied as a clear, oily liquid suitable for direct incorporation into emulsions and anhydrous systems. It is available in cosmetic-grade specification, the standard for personal care and OTC sunscreen applications. The material is provided with purity typically at or above 97 percent. Bulk supply is standard in drums and IBCs, with documentation packages aligned to EU Cosmetics Regulation and FDA OTC monograph requirements.
