What is Homosalate?
Homosalate (CAS 118-56-9), also known as homomenthyl salicylate or HMS, is an organic UV filter used in sunscreen and sun care formulations.
Where is Homosalate used?
- Sun care: primary UVB-filtering agent in leave-on lotions, sprays and daily moisturizers with SPF
- Formulation: solvent co-ingredient that dissolves solid UV filters such as avobenzone
- Color cosmetics and lip products with SPF claims: UV protection without adding opacity or texture
- In pharmaceutical topical preparations it prevents UV-induced degradation of light-sensitive actives.
Good to know: It absorbs UVB radiation in the 295–315 nm range, protecting the skin and the stability of other active ingredients.
