Octyl salicylate
Description
Octyl salicylate (CAS 6969-49-9), also known as octyl 2-hydroxybenzoate, is an organic UV filter used in sun care and cosmetic formulations to absorb UVB radiation in the 280–320 nm range.
It functions both as a UV absorber and as a solvent carrier for other active ingredients within a formula. In sunscreen and sun care products, it provides UVB protection and is frequently combined with other UV filters.
This combination helps to achieve broader spectrum coverage and meet regulatory SPF requirements. Its solvating properties make it useful for dissolving solid UV filters such as avobenzone, improving their incorporation.
This improves their stability into emulsions and anhydrous systems. Formulators in color cosmetics and daily moisturizers use it to add incidental UV protection while contributing to texture and spreadability.
In pharmaceutical topical preparations, it supports UV-protective formulations where photostability of active ingredients is a formulation concern. It is supplied as a clear, oily liquid in drum and IBC quantities.
These sizes are suited to industrial formulation volumes. It is available in cosmetic-grade specification, conforming to the purity requirements referenced in major pharmacopoeial and regulatory frameworks.
This includes the EU Cosmetics Regulation permitted UV filter lists. Technical-grade material is also available for non-cosmetic industrial applications requiring high-volume UV absorption capabilities.
