Octocrylene (CAS 6197-30-4) is an oil-soluble UV absorber that protects formulations and substrates from UV-induced degradation.
Where is Octocrylene used?
- Sun protection and daily-use cosmetics: primary or co-filter UV active
- Combined with other organic filters to broaden spectral coverage and improve photostability of labile actives such as avobenzone
- Coatings and adhesives: extends service life by preventing UV-triggered yellowing and bond degradation in clear coats, varnishes and outdoor adhesives
- Plastics and polymer processing: light stabilizer added during compounding to protect transparent or pigmented materials exposed to prolonged outdoor conditions
- UV-curable systems benefit from its compatibility with organic solvents and resins.
Good to know: It absorbs both UVB and short UVA radiation. Cosmetic-grade specifications meet EU Cosmetics Regulation and FDA OTC monograph requirements; technical-grade material is also available for industrial coating and polymer applications.
