Benzophenone-5
Description
Benzophenone-5 (CAS 6628-37-1), also marketed as Cyasorb UV 284 and Uvistat 112, is a water-soluble UV absorber derived from the benzophenone family. It protects substrates and formulations from UV-induced degradation by absorbing radiation.
This chemical is effective in the UVA and UVB ranges, making it suitable for aqueous systems where oil-soluble UV filters cannot be used. In personal care and cosmetics, it functions as a sunscreen active and photoprotective agent.
It is frequently utilized in water-based lotions, gels, and hair care products. Aqueous coating formulations for paper and packaging rely on it to prevent UV-induced yellowing and print fade, extending the shelf appearance of goods.
Adhesive and sealant manufacturers incorporate it into water-borne systems to stabilize the polymer matrix against photodegradation. This is particularly important for products intended for prolonged outdoor exposure and environmental stress.
Printing inks and varnishes intended for UV-exposed packaging also use it to protect colorants from fading. This ensures that branding and product information remain legible and vibrant throughout the entire product lifecycle.
The product is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder or as an aqueous solution at standard concentrations. It is available in cosmetic-grade and technical-grade specifications to meet various industrial requirements.
These grades ensure suitability for personal care formulators and industrial coating producers respectively. Packaging options typically range from kilogram-scale bags to bulk quantities for large-scale industrial procurement needs.
