Trolamine salicylate

Trolamine salicylate (CAS 2174-16-5), also known as triethanolamine salicylate, TEA-Salicylate, and marketed under the trade name Neo Heliopan TS, is the salt formed between triethanolamine and salicylic acid.

It functions as both a UV-absorbing active and a topical analgesic agent across personal care and pharmaceutical applications. In sunscreen formulations, it absorbs UVB radiation in the 290–320 nm range.

This provides photoprotection in lotions, creams, and sprays without requiring insoluble mineral filters. Topical OTC analgesic products including muscle rubs, joint creams, and pain-relief gels rely on it as the active ingredient.

Its water solubility allows formulators to build clear, aqueous-phase sunscreen and cosmetic products where oil-soluble UV filters would compromise aesthetics. This makes it a versatile choice for localized pain management.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers also use it as an intermediate in developing salicylate-based dermatological preparations. It is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder or as an aqueous solution.
