Hexabromocyclododecane
Description
Hexabromocyclododecane (CAS 3194-55-6), commonly abbreviated as HBCD, is an additive brominated flame retardant used primarily in thermoplastic and foam-based materials.
It functions by interrupting combustion cycles, reducing flammability in finished products to meet fire safety standards. In building and construction, HBCD is incorporated into insulation boards.
These expanded and extruded polystyrene (EPS/XPS) boards meet fire performance requirements for walls, roofs, and facades. Electronics manufacturers have used it in housings and enclosures.
Flame retardancy is required under IEC or UL standards for these components. Textile back-coating formulations for upholstery, curtains, and technical fabrics have historically relied on HBCD.
This chemical helps achieve specified flame spread ratings in various materials. It has also been applied in packaging foams and plastic components where ignition resistance is a requirement.
HBCD is supplied as a white to off-white powder or granule. Technical grade is the standard commercial form, with purity typically specified at 97% or higher for industrial applications.
Buyers should note that HBCD is listed under the Stockholm Convention as a persistent organic pollutant. Its use is restricted or banned in many jurisdictions across the globe.
Sourcing and application compliance must be confirmed against current regional regulations before procurement. Ensure all safety protocols are followed when handling this flame retardant material.
