Description

Tetrabromobisphenol A (CAS 79-94-7), commonly abbreviated as TBBPA, is the most commercially produced brominated flame retardant in the world. It functions as a reactive or additive flame retardant in polymer systems. The chemical interrupts combustion cycles to prevent ignition and limit fire spread in finished materials. In electronics manufacturing, TBBPA is reacted directly into epoxy resin matrices during the production of FR-4 printed circuit boards.

It becomes a permanent part of the cured laminate in these applications. Automotive and aerospace components use TBBPA-containing polymers to meet stringent flammability standards in interior panels, housings, and structural parts. In building and construction, it is incorporated into ABS, HIPS, and polycarbonate compounds. These materials are used for insulation panels, cable sheathing, and electrical enclosures across the global infrastructure sector.

Plastics compounders also use TBBPA as a precursor to produce derivative flame retardants. These include TBBPA-based epoxy oligomers and carbonate oligomers for use across multiple industrial end markets. TBBPA is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder for industrial use. Standard commercial grades include technical-grade material, with purity typically specified at 97% or higher for consistent performance.

Supply is available in bulk bags and fiber drums to suit various manufacturing scales. Specifications are strictly aligned to industrial and electronics-sector requirements for high-performance chemical additives.
