Tetrabromophthalic anhydride
Description
Tetrabromophthalic anhydride (CAS 632-79-1), commonly abbreviated as TBPA and marketed under the trade name FireMaster PHT 4, is a reactive and additive bromine-based flame retardant used across plastics, electronics, and textile manufacturing.
Its high bromine content makes it effective at meeting stringent flammability standards in demanding end-use applications. In electronics, TBPA is incorporated into epoxy resins and printed circuit board laminates.
This allows manufacturers to achieve UL 94 flame retardancy ratings required by component manufacturers. Polyester and polyurethane foam producers use it as a reactive intermediate, chemically bonding it into the polymer backbone.
This process helps to reduce migration and improve durability of flame retardant performance. Textile and upholstery back-coating formulations use TBPA-derived diols to meet fire safety regulations for commercial furnishings.
It is also utilized for transportation seating. In rigid and flexible polymer systems, it functions as both a processing additive and a reactive monomer, giving formulators flexibility in how flame retardancy is built.
TBPA is supplied as an off-white to pale yellow crystalline powder. It is available in technical grade, with purity specifications typically at 98% or higher depending on specific industrial application requirements.
Packaging options commonly include 25 kg bags and bulk quantities suited to industrial procurement volumes. This ensures a reliable supply chain for large-scale manufacturing operations across various global sectors.
