Tallow acid

CAS

Description

Tallow acid (CAS 61790-37-2), also sold as fatty acids tallow, is a mixed long-chain fatty acid blend derived from animal tallow. It is predominantly composed of oleic, stearic, and palmitic acid fractions.

It functions as a processing aid, lubricant, and surface modifier across a range of industrial manufacturing applications. In rubber and tire compounding, it acts as an internal lubricant and processing aid.

This material improves the dispersion of fillers and reduces mill sticking during production. Coatings and alkyd resin manufacturers use it as a reactive fatty acid component to control drying characteristics.

The product helps manage film flexibility in various coating systems. Textile and leather processors apply it in finishing formulations where it modifies surface friction and improves fiber or hide lubricity.

Metalworking fluid formulators incorporate it as a base component in soaps and emulsifiable oils. Consistent fatty acid chain distribution supports stable emulsification in these complex industrial fluids.

The product is supplied as a pale yellow to amber liquid or solid depending on temperature. It is available in bulk, intermediate bulk containers, and drums for diverse logistics requirements.

Standard commercial grades include technical grade, with specifications typically defined by acid value and iodine value. The titer point is also used to indicate the specific saturation level of the batch.

Distilled grades are available where tighter fatty acid profile control is required for sensitive formulations. These refined options ensure high performance in specialized chemical manufacturing processes.
