Sulphonated asphalt
Description
Sulphonated asphalt (CAS 68201-32-1), also supplied as sulfonated asphalt sodium salt, is a chemically modified bitumen derivative used primarily as a shale stabilizer and fluid loss control agent in drilling operations.
Its ability to seal permeable formations and inhibit clay swelling makes it a critical additive in water-based and oil-based drilling fluid systems. In oil and gas drilling, it reduces fluid invasion into shale formations.
This prevents wellbore instability and bit balling during directional and deep-well operations. Construction grout and cement slurry formulations use it as a dispersant and rheology modifier to improve pumpability and reduce water separation.
In mining applications, it functions as a lubricant additive in drill fluids, extending bit life and improving penetration rates in hard-rock environments. It also appears in asphalt emulsion formulations for road surfacing.
These formulations require controlled viscosity and emulsion stability for high-performance products. Sulphonated asphalt is supplied as a dark brown to black powder or granule for industrial use.
Standard commercial grades are designated for drilling fluid use and typically conform to API and oilfield industry specifications. Technical-grade material is the predominant market form for most global buyers.
Moisture content and solubility in water are the primary quality parameters buyers specify during procurement. The material remains a staple for maintaining integrity in challenging geological formations worldwide.
