1-butanol
Description
1-Butanol (CAS 71-36-3), also known as n-butyl alcohol, is a short-chain primary alcohol used across industrial manufacturing and consumer product formulation as a solvent, chemical intermediate, and flavoring agent.
Its FEMA 2178 designation confirms regulatory acceptance for flavor applications. Demand for this versatile chemical spans coatings, personal care, and food-grade end uses across global markets.
In coatings and resin manufacturing, 1-butanol acts as a reactive solvent in the production of butylated amino resins, including urea- and melamine-formaldehyde systems used in automotive and industrial finishes.
Personal care formulators use it as a carrier solvent in nail care products, fragrances, and skin-conditioning preparations where controlled evaporation and high purity are required for the final product.
As a FEMA-approved flavoring agent, it contributes buttery and fruity top notes to food and beverage products. It also serves as a chemical building block for butyl acrylate and butyl acetate synthesis.
The material is also essential for glycol ether synthesis in polymer and plasticizer production. 1-Butanol is supplied as a clear liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities for large-scale operations.
Standard commercial grades include technical, industrial, and reagent-grade specifications. A food-grade version meeting FCC standards is available for flavor and food-contact applications.
