Isobutanol
Description
Isobutanol (CAS 78-83-1), also known as IBA, is a short-chain aliphatic alcohol used across coatings, chemical synthesis, and flavor applications. It functions primarily as a solvent, chemical intermediate, and flavoring agent in both industrial and food-grade contexts.
In coatings and resin manufacturing, IBA acts as a reactive solvent and intermediate in the production of isobutyl acrylate and methacrylate esters. These feed directly into adhesive and polymer formulations for various industrial uses.
The food and beverage industry uses it as a FEMA 2179-approved flavoring agent, contributing fruity top notes to confectionery and baked goods. It is also utilized in beverages at controlled concentrations to enhance flavor profiles.
In personal care, it functions as a solvent carrier in fragrance compounds and aerosol formulations. This is particularly important where a controlled evaporation rate matters for the overall performance of the final product.
Plasticizer and resin producers also use IBA as a building block for isobutyl esters. This supports critical cross-linking chemistry in both alkyd and amino resin systems used throughout the chemical manufacturing sector.
Isobutanol is supplied as a clear liquid in standard bulk quantities including drums, IBCs, and isotanks. Technical grade is the primary commercial form, with food-grade material available to meet specific industry requirements.
The material is available to meet FCC specifications for flavor applications. Purity levels typically range from 99% and above for both industrial and food-grade supply chains globally.
