tert-Butanol
Description
tert-Butanol (CAS 75-65-0), also known as tert-butyl alcohol or TBA, is a tertiary alcohol used across chemical manufacturing, personal care, and food-related applications. It functions primarily as a solvent, process aid, and flavoring agent depending on the grade and end-use sector. In flavor manufacturing, TBA acts as a carrier solvent for flavor concentrates.
It is used as a synthetic flavoring substance in food products at controlled levels. Personal care formulators use it as a solvent and viscosity modifier in aerosol systems and deodorants. It is also utilized in topical formulations where controlled evaporation is required. In polymer and chemical synthesis, it serves as a reaction solvent and intermediate in producing isobutylene.
It also functions as a denaturant for ethanol in industrial and cosmetic applications, offering a recognized alternative to less palatable denaturants for various manufacturing processes. tert-Butanol is supplied as a liquid above its melting point or as a crystalline solid at ambient temperatures. Standard commercial grades include food-grade (FCC) and pharmaceutical-grade.
Available quality standards include USP and BP, alongside technical-grade for industrial processing. Bulk liquid supply in drums and ISO tanks is standard for high-volume buyers.
