Tung oil

Tung oil (CAS 8001-20-5), also traded as China wood oil, is a fast-drying, highly cross-linkable drying oil pressed from the seeds of the Vernicia fordii tree.

Where is Tung oil used?

• Architectural and industrial coatings: film-forming binder that delivers moisture resistance
• Wood finishes, deck sealers and marine varnishes: surface hardness
• Adhesives and sealants: reactive component improving flexibility and bonding durability in oil-based systems
• Printing inks, particularly lithographic and letterpress: rheology and set speed control
• Rubber compounding: processing and surface modification agent improving compatibility
• It polymerizes on exposure to air to form a hard, water-resistant film.

Good to know: Standard commercial grades include raw and heat-bodied variants, differentiated by viscosity and drying performance. Technical-grade predominates in industrial markets; refined grades are available for specialty coatings.
