Simethicone

Simethicone (CAS 8050-81-5) is a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane and silicon dioxide used industrially and pharmaceutically as an antifoaming and defoaming agent.

Where is Simethicone used?

• Pharmaceutical: antiflatulent tablets, suspensions and chewable formulations to reduce gastrointestinal gas discomfort
• Food and beverage processing: process aid that suppresses foam during fermentation and cooking
• Personal care and cosmetics: conditioning and smoothing agent in skin creams, lotions and hair care products
• Industrial: fermentation bioreactors and chemical processing equipment where foam control affects yield and process efficiency
• High-speed filling operations require foam suppression where excessive foam causes production losses.

Good to know: USP and NF grades are standard for pharmaceutical and food applications; food-grade specifications are also available for processing use.
