Polysiloxanes, di-Me
Description
Polysiloxanes, di-Me (CAS 63148-62-9), commercially known as PDMS or Dimethicone, is a silicone polymer used across industries for foam control, lubrication, and surface modification. In food and pharmaceutical applications, it is also recognized as E900. Procurement teams source it as a functional additive where controlled surface tension, slip, or defoaming performance is required.
In personal care, PDMS is incorporated into hair conditioners, skin creams, and primers to deliver slip and a non-greasy skin feel without occlusive buildup. Coatings and release liner manufacturers use it to reduce surface friction and prevent substrate adhesion during processing. Industrial defoaming is a primary application for this versatile polymer.
PDMS controls foam in food processing, fermentation, and wastewater treatment at low addition rates. In lubricants and metalworking fluids, it functions as a boundary lubricant and plasticizer. PDMS is supplied as a clear liquid across a broad viscosity range, typically from 0.65 cSt to 1,000,000 cSt, with viscosity grade being the primary specification buyers must confirm.
Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade material is available to FCC, USP, and Ph. Eur. standards under the Dimethicone monograph. Technical grades serve industrial coating and polymer applications.
