Phenoxyethanol

Phenoxyethanol (CAS 9004-78-8) is a synthetic glycol ether used primarily as a broad-spectrum preservative in personal care and cosmetic formulations. It also functions as a solvent and carrier in pharmaceutical and industrial applications.

Demand has grown significantly as formulators seek paraben-free preservation systems. In cosmetics and skincare, it is the preservative of choice in leave-on and rinse-off products including lotions, shampoos, and makeup.

It is typically used at concentrations up to 1% in these applications. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a preservative and co-solvent in topical preparations and injectable formulations where microbial control is critical.

In coatings and adhesives, it acts as a reactive diluent and solvent, improving flow and substrate wetting during application. Home care and industrial cleaning formulations incorporate it to extend product shelf life.
