Phenoxyethanol
Description
Phenoxyethanol (CAS 9004-78-8) is a synthetic glycol ether used primarily as a broad-spectrum preservative in personal care and cosmetic formulations. It also functions as a solvent and carrier in pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
Demand has grown significantly as formulators seek paraben-free preservation systems. In cosmetics and skincare, it is the preservative of choice in leave-on and rinse-off products including lotions, shampoos, and makeup.
It is typically used at concentrations up to 1% in these applications. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a preservative and co-solvent in topical preparations and injectable formulations where microbial control is critical.
In coatings and adhesives, it acts as a reactive diluent and solvent, improving flow and substrate wetting during application. Home care and industrial cleaning formulations incorporate it to extend product shelf life.
It also serves to stabilize active ingredients against microbial degradation. Phenoxyethanol is supplied as a clear liquid in drum and IBC quantities suited to both small-batch formulators and large-scale manufacturers.
Cosmetic-grade and pharmaceutical-grade (USP/BP) specifications are the most commercially prevalent, with technical grade available for industrial applications. Purity levels of 99% and above are standard.
