Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide (CAS 94-36-0), also known as BPO and approved as E928 in food applications, is an organic peroxide used as a free-radical initiator, bleaching agent, and curing catalyst.

Where is Benzoyl peroxide used?

• Plastics and rubber: free-radical polymerization initiator
• Resins, silicones and elastomers: cross-linking agent influencing cure speed and material properties
• Food treatment: flour bleaching agent accelerating natural whitening of wheat flour and improving dough handling
• Pharmaceuticals: active ingredient in topical acne treatments, targeting acne-causing bacteria through antimicrobial oxidizing action
• Personal care: medicated creams and gels at controlled concentrations for antimicrobial function
• In polymer manufacturing, food treatment and topical pharmaceutical formulations it generates reactive radicals on decomposition.

Good to know: Wetted or diluted with water or plasticizers to reduce explosion risk during handling and transport. Not to be confused with other peroxides; pharmaceutical-grade material must meet USP and Ph. Eur. specifications.
