It functions primarily as a chemical intermediate and precursor in the synthesis of accelerators, dyes, and biocidal agents. In rubber and tire manufacturing, it serves as a key building block.

This compound is essential for benzothiazole-based vulcanization accelerators, directly influencing cure rates and compound performance. Flavor and fragrance formulators use it under FEMA 3256. It contributes nutty, slightly roasted notes to food and beverage applications.
