Diphenylguanidine
Description
Diphenylguanidine (CAS 102-06-7), commonly abbreviated as DPG and sold under the trade name Vulkazit, is a secondary accelerator used in rubber vulcanization. It activates primary accelerators and improves cure efficiency across a broad range of rubber compounds. In tire manufacturing, DPG functions as a co-accelerator alongside thiazoles and sulfenamides, improving crosslink density and reducing cure time in both natural and synthetic rubber compounds.
It is used in industrial rubber goods, including belts, hoses, and seals, where consistent cure rates and mechanical performance are critical to product specification. In leather processing, DPG acts as a retanning auxiliary. It serves as a pH modifier, influencing dye uptake and leather softness in finishing formulations. Printing ink and textile applications use DPG as a curing agent in certain resin systems where controlled crosslinking is required.
Diphenylguanidine is supplied as a white to off-white powder or as pre-dispersed granules suited for mixing operations. Standard commercial grades are available for rubber industry use, with product specifications covering purity. Specifications typically cover melting point range and ash content. Technical grade is the predominant market form, with product conforming to established rubber chemical standards such as ISO and ASTM test methods.
