Diphenyl carbonate
Description
Diphenyl carbonate (CAS 102-09-0), commonly abbreviated as DPC, is a key monomer and reagent used across polymer synthesis, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and specialty chemical production.
It functions primarily as a carbonylating agent and transesterification reagent, enabling solvent-free and phosgene-free reaction pathways that are increasingly preferred in industrial processing.
In polycarbonate production, DPC reacts with bisphenol A via melt transesterification to produce engineering-grade polycarbonates without the use of phosgene, making this route attractive for manufacturers.
Pharmaceutical and agrochemical producers use DPC as a carbonate transfer reagent in the synthesis of carbamates, carbonates, and other active intermediates for various chemical applications.
In polycarbonate diol and polyurethane manufacturing, it contributes to building aliphatic carbonate segments that improve hydrolytic stability in the final polymer products and coatings.
DPC also appears in fragrance and flavor applications as a low-level fixative and esterification intermediate, though this remains a secondary commercial use for the chemical industry.
Diphenyl carbonate is supplied as a white crystalline solid, typically in flake or powder form, and in molten bulk for large-volume polymer-grade supply for industrial facilities.
Standard grades include technical and high-purity polymer-grade material, with pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP or BP standards available for regulated synthesis applications.
