Sodium dichromate
Description
Sodium dichromate (CAS 10588-01-9), also known as sodium bichromate, is an inorganic chromium(VI) salt supplied primarily as a strong oxidizing agent and corrosion inhibitor across heavy industry.
It is one of the most commercially significant hexavalent chromium compounds, used in metal surface treatment, chemical synthesis, and industrial processing for various sectors.
In metal finishing and anticorrosion systems, it functions as a passivation agent for aluminum, zinc, and magnesium surfaces, forming protective oxide layers that extend component service life.
The leather industry relies on it as a precursor in chrome tanning processes, where it oxidizes tanning auxiliaries to produce consistent, durable hides for manufacturing.
In mining and metallurgy, it serves in ore processing and as a flotation reagent for separating sulfide minerals. Pulp and paper operations use it as a bleaching oxidant.
It is also utilized in the production of chromate-based pigments for specialty papers and coatings. The compound is supplied as an anhydrous powder or as the dihydrate form.
The dihydrate is the most common commercial grade and is available in technical grade for industrial applications, typically at high purity concentrations for chemical synthesis.
Packaging ranges from drums to bulk quantities suited to large-scale industrial procurement. This ensures reliable supply chains for manufacturers requiring consistent chemical quality.
