Methyl isobutyl ketone
Description
Methyl isobutyl ketone (CAS 108-10-1), commonly known as MIBK, is a mid-boiling ketone solvent used across coatings, adhesives, and extraction processes. Its slow evaporation rate and strong solvency make it a preferred choice. Controlled drying and resin compatibility are critical procurement considerations for this versatile chemical. In industrial coatings and lacquers, MIBK dissolves nitrocellulose, epoxy, and vinyl resins to produce high-gloss finishes.
These film-forming finishes exhibit minimal blushing during the application process. Adhesive formulators rely on it as a carrier solvent in contact cements and pressure-sensitive adhesive systems where clean release is required. In plastics processing, it functions as a cross-linking and curing solvent for polymer systems including rubber and synthetic resins. At food-grade and FEMA 2731-approved purity, it is also used as a flavoring agent.
In small quantities, it can impart fruity, sweet notes to food and beverage formulations. MIBK is supplied as a clear liquid in standard drum, IBC, and bulk tanker quantities for various industrial and commercial needs. Technical grade is the most common specification for industrial solvent applications. Food-grade material meeting specific requirements is available for flavor use, ensuring compliance with necessary safety and quality protocols.
Purity levels typically range from 99% upward depending on the intended application grade. This high level of purity ensures consistent performance across diverse manufacturing sectors and specialized chemical processes.
