5-methyl-2-hexanone
Description
5-Methyl-2-hexanone (CAS 110-12-3), commercially known as MIAK or methyl isoamyl ketone, is a mid-chain ketone solvent used across industrial coating and flavoring applications. Its slow evaporation rate makes it a preferred choice where controlled drying and film formation are required. MIAK also functions as a flavoring agent, contributing fruity, ethereal notes to finished products.
In printing inks and industrial coatings, MIAK acts as a coalescing solvent that improves flow and leveling while extending open time during application. Metalworking and lubricant formulators incorporate it. It is used as a carrier solvent in cleaning and degreasing compounds where residue-free evaporation is critical. In personal care, it appears in nail care formulations and fragrance compositions.
Food and beverage manufacturers use MIAK as a FEMA-approved flavoring agent to deliver fruity and green top notes in confectionery, baked goods, and beverages for various markets. MIAK is supplied as a clear liquid in standard drum and IBC packaging suited for industrial volumes. It is available in technical grade for solvent applications and in flavor-grade specifications.
These specifications meet FCC requirements. Purity levels typically range from 98% to 99%+ depending on the intended application grade and the specific needs of the industrial formulator.
