Description

4-Methyl-2-Pentanol (CAS 108-11-2), commercially known as MIBC (Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol), is a branched-chain aliphatic alcohol used as a solvent and process chemical across multiple industrial sectors.

Its selective solvency and low water miscibility make it a practical choice for extraction, froth flotation, and formulation work. In mineral processing, MIBC is the dominant frother in froth flotation circuits.

It controls bubble size and stability to improve ore recovery for copper, zinc, and lead concentrates. Polymer and resin manufacturers use it as a process solvent and viscosity modifier during production and coating formulations.

In personal care, it functions as a carrier solvent in fragrance compounds and specialty cosmetic formulations where controlled evaporation is required. At flavor-grade specifications, MIBC also appears in flavoring applications.

These applications occur where its characteristic odor profile meets regulatory thresholds. MIBC is supplied as a clear liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities for various industrial needs.

Technical grade is the standard for mining and industrial solvent applications, while higher-purity grades are available for cosmetic and flavor end uses. Buyers should confirm purity specifications and water content limits.

When sourcing for sensitive formulation work, ensure the product meets necessary FCC or USP requirements. Proper handling and storage are essential to maintain the chemical integrity of the alcohol over time.
