1,2-dimethoxyethane
Description
1,2-Dimethoxyethane (CAS 110-71-4), commercially known as monoglyme or DME, is an ether-based solvent used across pharmaceutical synthesis, polymer chemistry, and electrochemical applications.
Its ability to coordinate with metal ions and dissolve a broad range of reactive intermediates makes it a preferred solvent in demanding synthesis environments. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, DME supports Grignard reactions.
It is also used in organolithium chemistry and other moisture-sensitive syntheses where a stable, non-protic solvent is required. Battery and energy storage manufacturers use it as a co-solvent or primary electrolyte solvent.
DME is utilized in lithium-ion and lithium-metal cell formulations. Polymer chemists rely on DME in controlled polymerization processes, including anionic and ring-opening polymerizations, where solvent coordination affects results.
It also functions as a reaction medium in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, where its chelating behavior stabilizes catalyst systems and improves yields. This makes it essential for high-performance chemistry.
1,2-Dimethoxyethane is supplied as a clear liquid in standard packaging ranging from drums to IBC containers and bulk quantities. Technical grade and anhydrous grades are the most commonly sourced specifications.
Anhydrous DME is used where strict moisture control is critical to reaction outcomes. High-purity grades suitable for battery electrolyte applications are available from select suppliers to meet industry requirements.
