Propylene glycol monostearate (CAS 1323-39-3), abbreviated PGMS and approved as E477, is a propylene glycol ester of stearic acid used as an emulsifier and plasticizer.

Where is Propylene glycol monostearate used?

• Food manufacturing: aerating emulsifier in cake mixes, whipped toppings and bakery shortenings
• Personal care: emulsion stabilizer and texture modifier in creams and lotions
• Pharmaceuticals: plasticizer and emulsifying agent in topical formulations and tablet coatings
• Plastics processing: internal lubricant and softener that reduces melt viscosity
• It is produced by esterifying propylene glycol with stearic acid.
