Description

Cochineal (CAS 1343-78-8), also known as Natural Red 4, is a natural red colorant derived from the dried bodies of the Dactylopius coccus insect. With FEMA 2330 designation, it delivers stable, vivid crimson-to-purple hues across food, cosmetic, and textile applications.

This natural colorant is ideal for industries where synthetic dyes are undesirable or restricted. In food and beverage manufacturing, it produces consistent red and pink shades in products such as yogurts, confectionery, juices, and processed meats.

Cosmetic formulators use it to achieve rich red tones in lipsticks, blushes, and eyeshadows where natural-origin colorants are a requirement. The textile industry applies it in dyeing natural fibers, particularly wool and silk, where it produces deep reds.

These applications benefit from lightfast reds achieved through mordant fixation. Leather goods manufacturers also use it as a finishing colorant to achieve premium, natural-toned surface treatments across various high-end leather products.

The product is commercially available as a dried powder, aqueous extract, and concentrated liquid solution. Standard grades include food-grade and cosmetic-grade, with supply conforming to FCC specifications for food applications.

It also meets relevant EU cosmetic regulations for personal care use. Carmine (E120), the aluminum lake derivative processed from the raw extract, is a related but distinct commercial form commonly sourced alongside the primary material.
