Ponceau 4R
Description
Ponceau 4R (CAS 2611-82-7), also sold as Cochineal Red A, New Coccine, and listed as E124 in the EU additive register, is a synthetic azo dye that delivers a vivid red-to-pink hue across food, cosmetic, and industrial coloring applications.
Brilliant Scarlet 4R is another recognized trade designation used in textile and printing markets. In food manufacturing, E124 is approved for use in products such as canned fruits, desserts, confectionery, and processed meat to achieve consistent red coloration.
Cosmetic formulators incorporate it into lipsticks, blushes, and rinse-off personal care products where a stable, bright red tone is required. In textile dyeing, it is applied to wool, silk, and nylon substrates using acid dyeing processes.
These processes produce uniform scarlet shades across various materials. Printing ink producers also use it as a colorant in packaging inks where regulatory compliance and color consistency are primary sourcing criteria for high-volume production.
Ponceau 4R is supplied as a water-soluble powder or granule, typically in deep red form. Food-grade material is available meeting E124 specifications under EU Directive standards, with purity levels commonly at or above 85% dye content.
Technical-grade material is available for textile and industrial applications where food compliance is not required. This ensures that manufacturers can select the appropriate grade based on their specific application needs and regulatory requirements.
