Description

Cobalt octoate (CAS 136-52-7), also sold as cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate, is an oil-soluble cobalt salt used as a metal drier and curing catalyst across coatings, adhesives, and polymer manufacturing. It accelerates oxidative crosslinking and cure reactions, making it a go-to catalyst where controlled drying speed and through-cure performance are critical sourcing criteria for industrial manufacturers.

In alkyd and oxidative-cure coatings, this material acts as a primary drier, accelerating surface dry times in architectural paints, industrial finishes, and high-performance printing inks. Rubber and tire compounders use it to promote adhesion between steel cord and rubber compounds during vulcanization, directly affecting bond strength in finished tire construction and safety.

In unsaturated polyester resins and gel coats, it functions as a promoter alongside peroxide initiators to control cure onset and the overall processing window during the manufacturing stage. Adhesive and sealant formulators incorporate it as a crosslinking catalyst in systems requiring fast ambient-temperature cure without the need for additional heat input or specialized equipment.

The product is supplied as a liquid solution, with cobalt metal content typically ranging from 6% to 12% in hydrocarbon or mineral spirit carriers to ensure easy integration into formulations. Both technical and coatings-grade specifications are available to meet different purity and color requirements. Drum, IBC, and bulk liquid supply formats are standard across the global market.
