2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol
Description
2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (CAS 144-19-4), commonly known as TMPD, is a specialty diol used across coatings, adhesives, and polymer systems. It functions as a coalescing solvent, plasticizer, and rheology modifier. This chemical helps formulators balance film formation, flexibility, and flow properties in finished products. In waterborne architectural and industrial coatings, it acts as a coalescing agent that improves film formation.
It performs well at low temperatures without the regulatory burden of conventional glycol ethers. Adhesive and sealant manufacturers incorporate it to enhance flexibility and substrate adhesion in polyurethane and acrylic formulations. In polyester resin synthesis, it serves as a diol monomer that introduces branching to control hardness and flexibility. This ensures compatibility with other resin components during the manufacturing process.
Cleaning product formulators use it as a carrier solvent where low volatility is required. It provides good solvency for organic soils in hard-surface and industrial cleaning concentrates for professional use. TMPD is supplied as a white crystalline solid or low-melting flake, with liquid form available in heated bulk supply. Standard commercial grades include technical and coatings-grade material with high purity.
The purity is typically at 98% or higher to meet industrial requirements. Packaging options range from drums to bulk isotanks for high-volume coatings and resin producers requiring consistent supply chains.
