1,1,1-tris(p-hydroxyphenyl)ethane
Description
1,1,1-Tris(p-hydroxyphenyl)ethane, also known as THPE, is a trifunctional phenolic monomer used as a branching agent and crosslinker in polymer systems. Its three reactive hydroxyl groups allow formulators to build controlled network structures. This chemical, identified by CAS 27955-94-8, is essential for epoxy, polycarbonate, and specialty coating resins. In epoxy coating and powder coating formulations, it introduces branching points that improve crosslink density.
These additions enhance the chemical resistance and thermal performance of the cured film. Adhesive and sealant manufacturers incorporate it to tune mechanical properties and increase cohesive strength in structural systems. Polycarbonate producers use it as a chain-branching comonomer to achieve high-melt-strength grades. These grades are particularly suited for demanding blow molding and extrusion applications in industrial manufacturing.
In rubber compounding and elastomer systems, it functions as a phenolic curative and stabilizer. This contributes to long-term oxidative stability and durability in various harsh environmental conditions. The product is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder for easy handling. Technical and high-purity grades are available, with purity specifications typically at 98% or above for processing.
These specifications ensure the material meets rigorous polymer-grade requirements. Packaging ranges from kilogram-scale bags for laboratory use to bulk quantities for large-scale industrial polymer production.
