4-methylbenzylidene camphor
Description
4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (CAS 36861-47-9), also known as 4-MBC and Enzacamene, is an organic UV filter used in sunscreen and cosmetic formulations. It absorbs UV-B radiation, protecting both the skin and the integrity of cosmetic products from photodegradation. Its primary use is in sunscreen products such as creams, lotions, and sprays where it functions as a UV-B filter. It is typically combined with other UV actives to achieve broad-spectrum protection for the end user.
In color cosmetics and daily moisturizers with SPF claims, it contributes to the required sun protection factor. This is achieved without significantly affecting product aesthetics or the final texture of the formulation. Formulators also incorporate it into hair care products such as leave-in conditioners and styling preparations. This application helps to prevent UV-induced color fading and protects the hair fiber from environmental damage.
4-Methylbenzylidene camphor is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder for industrial use. It is available in cosmetic-grade specification, with purity levels typically at or above 98% for high-quality manufacturing. The material is commonly evaluated against Ph.Eur. or in-house supplier monographs to ensure consistency. Packaging ranges from kilogram-scale quantities for development use to bulk drums for commercial production.
